SoCo Rescue was notified about a litter of possibly 6-8 puppies that were living in the woods off of Scotland Rd on the outskirts of Dublin, GA. At first it was thought that someone simply abandoned the pups but once the SoCo Rescue team arrived to check on the, they noticed a female dog walking near the location of the pups. She looked to have had a litter recently and was later confirmed to be the mom of the pups. This female dog has apparently been a stray in the area for some time and has eluded captured in the past. (**SoCo Rescue has ongoing efforts to try and capture the mom)

 

We found the pups living under a stack of old, rusty sheets of tin roofing that was buried under a natural compose of dirt, leafs and fallen tree limbs. The pups or their mom somehow dug underneath the sheets of tin, creating a den-like home for the pups to hide live and hide in. After cutting away the web of roots that had spread across the tin, Scott Bennett was able to start peeling away the sheets and eventually was able to see there were actually a total of 10 puppies living in the little cubby hole. With the help of the woman who alerted SoCo, we were able to retrieve all of the pups and get them loaded on our transport bus. They were very scared and confused, not to mention showing signs of being full of worms. Once we got the pups to a foster home, they received baths, dewormers, vaccines and, of course, good food and clean water.

 

During their stay at the foster home the pups have had the opportunity to interact with people and young children. While they've made progress, they still remain a little shy when first meeting new people, but given a little patience and understanding, they'll grow more accustomed and comfortable being around people. Despite their initial shyness, each pup still finds comfort in snuggling up with the person who is holding and even began playing, giving kisses and wanting to play. Still, their ideal homes should be without a lot of commotion, noise or stress. We'd also not recommend homes with small/young children.

 

The Scotland Rd pups have all now received 2/3 of their first year puppy vaccines, been de-wormed and treated against parasites and started on their monthly flea/tick and heartworm preventatives. Their adopters must agree on having their pup spay/neutered once it reaches 6 months of age and provide verification of such to our rescue. They will require all of their basic training.
