Description:

In the summer of 2016 we were told about a dog whose owners had simply moved away and left him and their other dogs to fend for themselves. Carl was, in fact, living alone within a fenced area with the grass overgrown to waist high level and he looked to be starving. Upon investigating the situation, however, we discovered that one of his owners had taken ill and had been hospitalized in a different state and the husband was spending his time traveling back and forth to tend to his sick elderly wife. A friend of the couple had reassured them that he was taking proper care of Carl and the other dogs but that was not the case. This "friend" would only go by the home once a week, dump a bunch of food on the ground and left a number of buckets setting out to catch rain water for Carl to drink. Carl had become apprehensive of people due to this neglect and was probably 30 lbs underweight.

After speaking to the owner, we began what ended up being a year long process of caring for Carl and getting him back to the best health as possible. In no time, Carl became very trusting of us and slowly began to gain his weight back. In the winter of 2017 Carl's owners gave us permission to take him and their other two dogs into our rescue.

Since that time Carl has shed his apprehension of people and become quite the friendly fellow. He particularly enjoys his daily meals almost as much as he does his interaction with people. Unfortunately Carl's health will never be at 100% as he is positive with heart worms and has other issues, such as needed dental work, that he will have to live with for the remainder of his life. To subject a senior dog to anesthesia  would put his life in danger and the heart worm treatments might proved too strenuous on his internal organs. Still, Carl, who still likes to run and play, can enjoy the remaining years of his life with certain care being provided to him and there's no other dog that we've ever met that deserves such a chance.

If you can give this senior fellow the home that he deserves for his final years of life then please submit an application at socorescue.com
